US Coast Guard
Training:Drove the Coast Guard training system to become fully performance-based. Directed the efforts of 15 Headquarters Training Managers and over 500 course designers and instructors at 7 Coast Guard Training Centers. Courses were considered the standard in the industry for their replication of the field environment and their applied focus. Leadership:Initiated, researched, and created a comprehensive leadership improvement package featuring over 100 potential training and non-training actions. Recommendations and follow-up lead to developing the Leadership Development Center and ensuring that leadership was an agenda item at every Flag (semi-annual Admiral's) conference. Ensured that every Coast Guard leadership course was performance-based and supported the Service's core values and defined competencies. Core Values:Convened a panel of 20 individuals that oversaw and delivered Coast Guard leadership training. Compared curricula, analyzed the leadership system, and produced the first-ever set of Coast Guard "core values". Coaching:Coached over 20 U. S. Coast Guard Headquarters Training Managers (from very diverse backgrounds) over a 5 year period. Results seen in use of significantly more non-training interventions and substantially improved front-end-analyses, curriculum outline reviews, and external evaluations. Front-End Analysis:Teaming partner for several Front-End Analyses/Needs Assessments regarding International Port Security Liaison Officers, Contingency Staffing personnel, and eLearning. Missile Defense Agency
Team Building:Facilitated the Missile Defense Agency's System Testing Directorate into a High Performance Team. Over 15 months, produced a two year vision, identified and removed barriers to that vision, surveyed customers and employees and created action plans to resolve issues of pain, and established a set of key measurements to monitor team progress. Balanced Scorecard:Teaming partner in the build of a Balanced Scorecard and strategic leadership system for JIATF-East – a taskforce of all 5 military services, 9 federal agencies, 3 NATO nations, and 12 Latin and South American nations. Personally facilitated the Focus on People team and authored the Communications Plan. Brookings BCEETeam Building:Facilitated Brookings' Center for Executive Education into a High Performance Team (HPT) – overcoming several internal challenges. Coached the Senior Director. Facilitated the development of their Core Values. Multiple Federal AgenciesChange Management:As a teaming partner, conducted 17 two-day Communications and Change Management workshops for implementing the Balanced Scorecard. Federal clients included the Joint Interagency Task Force (Key West), US House of Representatives Chief Administrative Office, Defense Energy Supply Center, US Marine Corps Systems Command, Department of Commerce, and Passport Canada. Coaching:Coached 9 Associates, Senior Associates, and Principals for various issues related to client handling, seeing themselves as seen by others, leading change, and staff relationships. Facilitated three-year Visions and lead offsite teambuilding meetings for internal departments. General Motors (GMYES)/Automotive Youth Educational Systems (AYES)
Program Design:Teaming partner in defining the strategy, outcomes, evaluation plan, and design of the GMYES/AYES Initiative (a recent nationwide School to Work apprenticeship program designed to graduate entry level dealership technicians from 12th grade.) Conceptualized and wrote the initial AYES booklet containing the program intent, roles and responsibilities, and results and benefits for each stakeholder group. Facilitated the definition of the employability (personal) skill sets. Envisioned and created the Curriculum Taskforce. AYES is now working in over 400 schools, 4000 dealerships, and 45 states. Leadership:Conducted a needs assessment to identify the knowledge, skills, and confidence strengths and areas for improvement in the 70-person leadership cadre. Identified and defined key leadership competencies, framed a leadership training and development approach, and offered a 5-year plan with a mix of internal and external learning opportunities. Facilitated a nationwide offsite meeting of their top 40 leaders. Xerox CorporationCommunications:Designed, developed, and delivered proposal and PowerPoint presentation style guides, user manuals, and workshops for global and national account sales managers and staff. Designed and wrote business plans for federal and state government practices. Planned, organized, and conducted all logistics and communications for numerous on-site conferences and workshops (3-day to -5-day events) for hundreds of sales staff. Writing:Delivered two workshops on POWER Writing (Beyond the Fundamentals and Writing as an Individual) to mid-level plant managers. Team Building:
Facilitated their group into becoming a High Performance Organization (HPO). Over two years conducted organizational and team assessments, made recommendations regarding leadership team composition and roles, facilitated and implemented organizational Core Values, and coached the President and Chief Operating Officer.
American Trucking Associations
Training/Performance Improvement:
Coached the Director of the North American Transportation Management Institute to commit to determining a strategic direction and outcome-based focus for their six training courses and certification program. Reengineered their processes to have the certification requirements and associated training align with the job performance responsibilities for each of the five trucking functions/positions requiring certification.
International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI)
Strategic Planning:
Facilitated ISPI Potomac Chapter's Vision and Strategic Plan for 2012. This includes a strategy map and annual plans that build on each other to achieve the vision.
Community Service Project:
Led 10 members of the Potomac Chapter in a Community Service Project helping the Arlington-Alexandria Coalition of the Homeless. Coached the President of the organization and assisted the group over a six month period in strengthening/developing its Board of Directors and defining a strategic plan. The Chapter won a national ISPI award for the project.
Pacific Northwest Capacity Builders
Evaluation:
Teaming partner in the definition of a common evaluation framework for the Pacific Northwest Capacity Builders (a consortia of 20 different environmental not-for-profit organizations). The group wanted to implement evaluation systems that were more outcome-focused and allowed better intra-group comparisons. Researched best practices of program and training evaluation in the non-profit community. Conducted a two-day workshop to teach basic principles of evaluation and instructional design. Produced two frameworks – one for trainings of less than two weeks; another for longer-term consultant relationships. Facilitated their two-day annual meeting the following year.
Boy Scout Troop 1196
Strategic Planning:
Led a six month process to define a vision for the Troop. The vision used a modified Balanced Scorecard framework. Monthly "Parent's Meetings" were used to build ownership and commitment, define implementation criteria for the vision's major categories, and get volunteers to coordinate action items.
